DESCRIPTION:
EPW - Garrard, Panton Street, London, quarter-hour repeater fusee with concealed plunge activation (a system originally invented by Breguet; to activate repeat function the pendant cap is lifted and then turned 90 degrees before depressing), 54mm, heavy 18K gold OF original case with gold cuvette bearing London hallmarks for 1816, stippled gold dial with applied gold Roman numerals, KWKS, table roller right angle lever escapement, diamond endstone, compensation curb, gilt mvt, s#812. Gross weight of assembled watch 104.8 dwt (163.0 g). Our knowledgable consignor notes that the table roller escapement of the present piece is a later conversion from the original escapement design.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, good repeat function apart from an omission of third quarter strike between 12:45 and 12:59 but repeat tone is substantially muffled and abrupt suggesting that gongs or hammers are not in order, overhaul needed for repeat tone, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous plates with scattered fine scratches, very minor oxide to set-up assembly; dial has scattered fine scratches within seconds-register; excellent hands; case shows medium wear, one ding to rear lower center with corresponding ding to cuvette, dent to band at 3:30, reduced engine turning detail with full loss at shoulder; bow pivots semi-freely, plunge shows ample wear; good glass crystal.
